Get Ready for Movember: Growing More Than Just a Moustache!…

…As November approaches, so does the chance to get involved in a movement that’s about more than just facial hair! Movember is all about raising awareness & support for men’s health issues like prostate cancer, mental health & suicide prevention. It's a time for us all to unite & make a difference & maybe grow a moustache (or support someone who does)! But, how do we prepare & make this Movember count?

What’s Movember All About?
Let’s kick off with a little context. Movember is a global movement that started as a fun way to bring attention to serious issues, encouraging men to take care of their physical & mental health. Whether you’re growing a ‘mo, getting active, or just sharing the message, it’s about igniting change, one conversation at a time.

Preparing Your Mindset with DISC
When we look at it through the lens of DISC profiling, different personality types might approach Movember in unique ways:

  • D’s (Dominance): You’re driven by results & action. For you, it’s about making a big impact, perhaps by leading a fundraising team or taking charge of a Movember event.

  • I’s (Influence): You love to connect & inspire. Share your Movember journey on social media, gather a group of friends & motivate others to join in.

  • S’s (Steadiness): You value consistency & support. Movember is your chance to quietly nurture & show up for friends & family who may need support with their health.

  • C’s (Compliance): You’re about the details & data. Dive into research, raise awareness with facts & help others make informed decisions about their health.

Where do you fall within DISC? Understanding your profile can help you prepare for Movember in a way that feels aligned with your strengths.

Tapping into NLP for Motivation
Sometimes, we need a little boost to get us moving (& growing those ‘staches!). That’s where Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques can come in handy. NLP can help us reframe how we think about goals & challenges:

  • Visualise success: Picture yourself reaching your fundraising goals or inspiring others through your involvement. How does it feel? What can you see, hear, or even smell (perhaps the scent of success… or moustache wax)?

  • Reframe the challenge: If you feel nervous about asking for donations or talking about men’s health, change your inner dialogue. Instead of “I hate asking for money” try, “I’m giving people the chance to support an important cause

Appealing to VAKOG (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, Gustatory)
We all process the world in different ways, so here’s how Movember can appeal to various senses to keep things interesting:

  • Visual: Get creative with your fundraising pages or create a cool moustache design. Share progress pictures or eye-catching graphics on social media to engage your audience.

  • Auditory: Join podcasts or listen to interviews with people who have experienced the impact of men’s health issues. Sharing their stories could resonate with your auditory preference.

  • Kinesthetic: If you’re a ‘doer’, find an active way to get involved, like the "Move for Movember" challenge, which encourages people to run or walk 60km throughout the month.

  • Olfactory & Gustatory: Ok, we might be stretching it a bit here, but why not make Movember an experience for all senses? Organize a Movember-themed BBQ or create a special recipe to bring people together in a fun, sensory way!

Why Getting Ready for Movember Matters
At its core, Movember is about connection. It’s a chance for us to check in on our mates, open up conversations about health & help shift the stigma that often surrounds men’s mental & physical wellbeing. Whether you participate by growing a moustache, donating, or simply spreading the word, your involvement matters. It could inspire someone to get the help they need or take that important step toward a healthier future.

How I’m Getting Ready
Personally, I’ve used coaching techniques to prepare for this kind of cause. Having dealt with procrastination (like many of us!), I’ve worked on building self-awareness & motivation through my coaching journey. Tools like DISC & NLP have helped me shift my mindset & I’m here to help you do the same if you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to start.

So…what’s your plan for Movember?

How Can Women Help?
Ladies, Movember isn’t just for men! You can play a huge role in supporting the cause. Whether it's encouraging the men in your life to take part, starting important conversations about health, or getting involved in the "Move for Movember" challenge yourself, your support matters! Here are a few ways women can make a difference:

  • Motivate the Men: Be the reminder they need to book that check-up or stay active this month. Your encouragement could be the nudge that makes all the difference.

  • Fundraise Together: Get creative & start a team effort, whether it’s organising events, walks, or online fundraisers to help support men’s health initiatives.

  • Spread Awareness: Use your platforms to talk about men’s health issues, sharing stories, facts, or even just wearing a Movember pin to show solidarity.

  • Get Active for the Cause: Join the "Move for Movember" challenge or organise a fun, active event with friends & family to raise awareness while keeping fit.

Movember is about making a collective impact & everyone has a role to play! So, let’s come together this November & show our support for men’s health…growing awareness, having conversations & motivating each other to take action.

Join the movement, ignite change & let’s grow together!
